St Patrick's Day Shirts - Buying St Patrick's Day Shirts - Types of St. Patrick’s Day Shirts

St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated for over 400 years. It was once a Catholic holiday of feasting. As the years passed, the holiday began to become more of a celebration of the country that accepted St. Patrick as their patron than about the saint himself. The holiday is traditionally held on March 17, the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death.

In the U.S., the holiday was used as a political statement by Irish immigrants who were considered to be in one of the lowest social classes in the new land. As Irish nationalism sprung up in New York and Boston, other cities followed suit with celebrations and parades of their own.

Today, the holiday is celebrated with parades in some cities and with eating traditional Irish foods and the mass consumption of alcoholic beverages in others. It is a custom to wear green on this day, but many people prefer to go all out by buying and wearing specialty St. Patrick’s Day shirts.

Types of St. Patrick’s Day Shirts

St. Patrick’s Day shirts are usually in the form of T-shirts, but because it is still officially winter, sweatshirts are popular, too. One thing all of these shirts have in common is that they have green on them somewhere, the color most associated with Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day shirts are low to moderately-priced. Many stores sell them for $12.95 or less. They are available in sizes for babies and go up to adult 6XL. These shirts are typically fall into one of several categories:

Shamrock T-Shirts – These shirts are usually white or green and feature the symbol of the shamrock prominently on the front or back. The shamrock can be silkscreened, a decal, or less commonly, stitched.

Irish T-Shirts – Some people find it more appropriate to buy an all-encompassing Irish shirt rather than a St. Patrick’s Day shirt because they can be worn all year-round. Shirts in this category include the popular “Made in Ireland” shirts and the “100% Irish” shirts.

St. Patty’s Day Shirts – Many people prefer to abbreviate the holiday as either St. Patty’s Day or St. Paddy’s Day. This gives the holiday a fun and whimsical quality.

Kiss Me Shirts – Another popular type of St. Patrick’s Day shirts are those that say “Kiss me: I’m Irish.” This theme has been played on in several humorous twists, including, “Kiss me: I’m drunk” and “Kiss me: I’m Irish…and cute, too!”

Funny T-Shirts – St. Patrick’s Day shirts are often humorous. They can feature funny Irish characters such as leprechauns or have funny Irish or St. Patrick’s Day-themed sayings, slogans, or jokes printed on them.

Where to Buy St. Patrick’s Day Shirts

St. Patrick’s Day shirts can be found anywhere clothing is sold at the right time of year. Any number of stores will have the shirts available for sale after Valentine’s Day has passed. To save some money, many people buy their Irish shirts at discount stores such as Walmart, Kmart, and Target.
