Niagra Falls New York - The Magnificent Niagara Falls New York

water american include travel

Sharing the border between the United States and Canada, one can find the largest waterfalls in the United States, Niagara Falls. They lie between the cities of Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario. These waterfalls were formed from glaciers that receded at the end of the last ice age. Lakes Huron, Superior, Erie, and Michigan were created at this time, and today they hold about a fifth of the world’s fresh water. The outflow from these lakes runs into the Niagara River, which then carries the water downstream, eventually ending at a cliff where it cascades to the bottom. Although the height of the falls is not excessive, the width of them is more than average. Only Victoria Falls in South Africa is larger than Niagara Falls New York.

Niagara Falls is not just one large waterfall. It consists of two main waterfalls-the Horseshoe Falls, and the American Falls. While approximately two thirds of the Horseshoe Falls lie in Canada, the American Falls lie totally in America. The average flow of water over the American Falls is approximately 150,000 US gallons every second, while at the Horseshoe Falls the flow is approximately 600,000 US gallons every second.

In a typical year, nearly twelve million visitors come to Niagara Falls to partake of the beauty of this natural wonder. There are many activities available in and around Niagara Falls that all members of a family can take part in. One of the most popular activities at Niagara Falls is the ride on the “Maid of the Mist”. In reality, there are seven boats, all called “Maid of the Mist” which have been used over the last 150 years. This boat, known around the world, takes visitors as close to the waterfalls as is safely possible. Visitors can take this ride between the months of April and October, before ice starts forming, and one can catch the boat from either the American side or Canadian side. Some popular tourists who have taken this ride include Teddy Roosevelt, Diana, Princess of Wales, and Marilyn Monroe, just to name a few.

Another popular tourist destination is the “Aquarium of Niagara”, in the city of Niagara Falls. Many refer to it as “Niagara’s Other Water Wonder”. One can explore over 40 sea life exhibits, including those for sharks, California Sea Lions, Moray Eels, Octopus, and even Peruvian Penguins, which are on the endangered list. There are approximately 1,500 aquatic animals within this aquarium, making this a great activity for families with children.

One activity that may or may not be appropriate for young children is a trip to the Cave of the Winds. On this hike, one will travel into the gorge and travel under the falls. Visitors use ponchos and receive sandals as a souvenir, which will come in handy, especially if they desire to visit the Hurricane Deck, which allows the visitor to view the Falls while standing only a few feet from the pounding water. If one visits at night, the falls are lit up with the colors of the rainbow.

Other activities available to the tourist when visiting Niagara Falls in New York include the Daredevil Museum, where one can see objects such as barrels used to go over the falls and a jet ski that one daredevil used to attempt to leap over the falls. Other sites one may wish to visit include “Niagara’s Wax Museum of History”, “The Niagara Science Museum”, and the “Niagara Falls State Park”, which is the oldest state park in America.

There are several interesting facts about Niagara Falls and their history. For instance, on March 30, 1848, the flow of the falls completely stopped, due to an ice jam in the Niagara River. For those whose interests include movies, it is worth noting that two movies, “Niagara” and “Superman”, had parts filmed at the Falls. Another interesting fact involving Niagara Falls relates to stuntmen. Many have heard stories at one time or another regarding people going over the falls in a barrel, sometimes successful, sometimes not. Even more daring are the high wire tightrope acts that involve walking on a tightrope across the falls. However, since it is now illegal to take part in these stunts, no one has recently attempted to try their hand at stunts like these. Finally, for the history enthusiast, the word “Niagara” comes from the Iroquois Indian word “Ongiaahra”, which means “the strait”. These are just a few of the points that help to make Niagara Falls New York the unique site that it is.

For those who like to travel, a trip to Niagara Falls is a destination everyone should have on their itinerary. With the unique natural wonders, as well as the diverse activities available for all ages, no one can go wrong when they choose to travel to Niagara Falls New York. Whether for work or for fun, there is something for everyone, even if all one wants to do is to relax and see the sites.
