Porto, or Oporto, in English, sits on the Douro River in northern Portugal. It is Portugal’s second-largest city after Lisbon and the capital of Port wine. This is a thriving city, steeped in history that sits right next to new towering structures. The Ribeira, or the historic center of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Among Porto, Portugal’s attractions are its many artistic creations, a Cathedral district filled with medieval churches, six stunning bridges, including two designed by Gustave Eiffel and a student, a Port Wine Museum, the 15th-century home of the royal family, a library, and more. Port wine, which is known and loved throughout the world, is widely accepted in Porto itself as a dessert wine. Part of Porto’s charm is that many of its houses were built close together, packed against each other onto the steep rock face. There are many hotels in Porto, Portugal, depending on your taste and your budget.

The five-star Hotel Pousada do Porto – Palácio do Freixo in Porto, Portugal offers 87 rooms and was designed by architect Nasoni in the mid 18th century. The three-star Hotel da Bolsa is located just five minutes from Porto, Portugal’s lively Ribeira area. The hotel also has easy access to the banks of the Douro River, and it is just another few steps across the famous D. Luis Iron Bridge to Gaia. The hotel’s central location puts it near the Stock Exchange building or Palacio da Bolsa along with attractions such as the Oporto Cathedral, the Church of St. Francis and the Mercado Ferreira Borges Exhibition Center.

But 30 years later, after being hit by a big fire, it was rebuilt in a Beaux Arts style for an insurance company. Then, in 1994, after several years of sitting idle, it reopened as a government three-star hotel, which is how it was when the Hotel da Bolsa took it over.

The Hotel da Bolsa offers 36 furnished rooms, that are compact, but have very high ceilings. There is also a breakfast room, where the complimentary meal is served each morning, a bar/lounge, a TV lounge, and an elevator lift.
