Southern University located in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a part of the Southern University System of colleges. This system of schools includes Southern University in Shreveport, A&M College in Baton Rouge, and the Southern University Law Center of Baton Rouge. Southern University of New Orleans has traditionally been known as an African American university. Southern University of New Orleans is fully accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Council for Social Work Education, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The school is currently an open enrollment university until the start of the 2010 year. After this date it will require students to complete the state’s mandated high school curriculum for admissions. One additional requirement is that students must graduate with a GPA of at least 2.0. Potential students must also have a score of at least 950 on the SAT or a 20 on the ACT. The average tuition is just under $4000.00 a semester. This average is based on the cost of just under $2000.00 for in state students and around $5600.00 for those who live outside of Louisiana. Financial aid is available for all students with special aid available to potential student athletes. Southern University at New Orleans offers a wide variety of courses.

One area of study at Southern University of New Orleans is in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students can work towards a Bachelor of Arts degree with courses in Psychology, Sociology, Substance Abuse Counseling, History, English, and Biology. A Bachelor of Science degree is offered with classes in Health Information Management and Mathematics, and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor of General Studies is also available.

The College of Business and Public Administration at Southern University of New Orleans offers a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a Bachelor’s degree of Arts in Public Administration. The College of Education has degrees in Child Development and Family Studies as well as Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. The College of Social Work offers a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare, while the School of Graduate Studies makes a Master’s degree available in three different fields. These include Master of Arts: Museum Studies, Master of Social Work, and Master of Science: Criminal Justice.

When it comes to student life and athletics, Southern University of New Orleans has men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as track and field and cross country. They also offer women’s volleyball. The school is a former member of the NCAA’s Division III and a current member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The men’s basketball team has appeared in six NAIA tournaments while the women’s team has played in one. Southern University of New Orleans holds seven national championship titles in all between its time in the NCAA and NAIA.

Southern University New Orleans was established in September of 1956. It opened its doors to the first students on the 21st of September in 1959. The school started as a branch of Southern University in Baton Rouge and had only fifteen instructors, one building, and 158 students. Only four major subjects were available for study at that time. These included Science, Social Science, Humanities, and Commerce. The first graduations took place in May of 1963. Fifteen students were awarded Bachelor’s degrees. The school saw rapid growth in its first five years reaching a student enrollment of nearly 1,300 and a faculty of 70 members by the fall of 1964.

One of the major changes in the history of Southern University came in January of 1964. A white school teacher by the name of Virginia Cox Welch sued the Louisiana State Board of Education because the college had only allowed African American students to enroll up to that point. The case was won in Federal courts and the university had to open its doors to students of any color or ethnicity. The institution continues to grow and expand today and is perhaps best known for its excellent programs in Criminal Justice and Social Work.
