Stainless Steel Undermount Sinks - Choosing the perfect Stainless Steel Undermount Sinks for Your Kitchen

When it comes to choosing the perfect stainless steel undermount sinks for your kitchen, there are several things that must be taken into consideration. Not only should the sink chosen serve the purpose for which it was intended, i.e. service versus entertaining, but should also fit nicely into the overall kitchen design scheme.

Before getting into which sink is right for your kitchen, however, it is important to know the difference between an undermount sink and a regularly placed sink, or a drop down sink, as it is more commonly referred to.

A drop down sink is installed by dropping the sink down into a pre-cut hole in the kitchen counter. The lip surrounding the sink rests upon the countertop and is held in place with strong adhesive and sealant. The undermount kitchen sink is installed from beneath the sink and is pushed up through the pre-cut hole in the countertop. The edge of the undermount sink sits flush with the countertop and is then held in place with adhesive and sealant. Sometimes additional support, such as legs, are mounted underneath the sink to add stability.

Stainless steel undermount sinks come in several sizes, shapes and number of bowls. The most common stainless steel undermount kitchen sink is a dual-bowl design with both sinks having identical dimensions. This sink comes in handy in a kitchen that sees lots of action such as in a home with a large family. Having two bowls allows much more room for meal preparation as well as clean up. The large one-bowl rectangular design fashioned after the old farmers’ sinks is another type of undermount sink that serves a busy kitchen well. This type of sink is making a comeback in kitchen style design.

For smaller kitchens that are mainly used for show and occasional entertaining, an offset double-bowl stainless steel undermount sink works best. In this design, there is a larger bowl for washing dishes and other chores set alongside a smaller bowl for preparing vegetables and other foods for cooking and entertaining. The smaller dimensions fit well within a smaller kitchen space and this sink is a popular design choice for gourmet kitchens.

Triple-bowl stainless steel undermount sinks are more commonly seen in the upscale kitchen where not only are there two bowls for washing dishes and food preparation chores, but a third bowl that is used to prep fruits for drinks or chill wine while dinner is cooking. This type of sink comes in the standard side-by-side design with either the two larger bowls together and a smaller prep bowl to the side, or in a triangular pattern where the two larger bowls are separated by a small prep bowl area in the top portion of the triangle.

As far as kitchen design goes, stainless steel undermount sinks fit nicely into any décor scheme. The fact that the sinks fit flush with the countertop gives the sink area a more seamless and finished look. Paired with granite countertops, there simply isn’t a nicer combination for a modern kitchen. The larger farmer’s sink fashioned from stainless steel and set within a countertop, adds a rustic flair to kitchens that are designed to harken back to simpler times but which also require modern conveniences in order to serve the homeowner’s needs.

Stainless steel undermount sinks come in as many styles and sizes as drop down sinks, so there is absolutely no reason not to install one in the kitchen of your dreams for that seamless, designer look that so many homeowners today are enjoying.
