Polk In Wall Speakers - How to Install Polk In-Wall Speakers

2. gather your supplies. 7. remove baseboards. 9. hide the wires. 13. finish the job.

In this modern age of sophisticated home entertainment systems, in-wall speakers are an extremely popular choice. In-wall speakers allow you to get the ultimate audio experience without compromising any design aspect of the room where you are installing them. Of all the systems available on the market, Polk in-wall speakers are the most popular.

The reasons are obvious: Polk makes some of the best audio equipment available and their in-wall designs are particularly innovative. Of course, this all comes at a price. Polk in-wall speakers are not cheap. Therefore, many consumers consider installing the Polk in-wall speakers themselves in order to save money. The good news is that this is not an overly difficult process.

1. Plan the speaker placement.

Plan speaker placement even before you start researching and shopping. If you’re shopping at brick and mortar stores, take photos of the room, and brings those with you. This is a back and forth process of evaluating the options among Polk in-wall speaker systems, and deciding what makes sense in the area you have assigned for your home theater. Note steps #2-4 during the purchase.

2. Gather your supplies.

Beside the Polk in-wall speakers kit, you’re going to need some tools: drop cloths or painter’s plastic, electrical tape, a drywall saw, a level, measuring tape, number two pencils, speaker wire, a stud finder, a non-metallic wire fishing tool, and wire strippers.

3. Pencil-in speaker placement before any work begins.

Follow the included instructions closely. You must evenly space your Polk in-wall speakers in order to maximize acoustics. Use the measuring tape and the level to insure that the wall height of each speaker level is identical. Take care at this point. It is a critical step in creating that professional look.

4. Find and mark the studs.

Use the stud finder to locate the studs, and then mark them with the pencil. Remember, it is only necessary to find studs in the areas of the walls where you will install the Polk in-wall speakers. You must hang the Polk in-wall speakers in between studs, so if a stud runs through a planned area, you’ll have to reconfigure your plans.

5. Use the kit template to mark locations.

The access template is included in all Polk in-wall speaker kits. Simply place it against the wall in the appropriate location, and then trace it with the pencil.

6. Cut out the access holes.

Before starting, place drop cloths or painter’s plastic along the walls where you will be cutting. Now use the drywall saw to cut the access hole for the speaker housing as defined by the template.

7. Remove baseboards.

On each wall where you will install the Polk in-wall speakers and on the wall where you will position the receiver, pry back and remove the baseboards.

8. Pull speaker wire from baseboard through access hole, and tape it.

Drop the non-metallic fishing tool through the access hole until it reaches below the drywall line. Connect the speaker wire, and then pull it up through the access hole. You can then tape it in place with electrical tape at the access hole. You now need to drag the wire to the receiver. Mark the wire, and then cut it. Do the same thing for each location.

9. Hide the wires.

Hide the wires along the bottom of each wall. With each wire tucked in safe and neat, nail the baseboard back into place. Make sure you are nailing above the speaker wire.

10. Install the Polk in-wall speaker.

Install each of the Polk in-wall speakers in turn. Follow the instructions included with the kit.

11. Connect speaker wire to speaker.

Strip an inch of insulation off at the end of each pair of wire, and then connect the wire to the speaker. Be aware of which wire you are connecting to the positive terminal. You must connect them the same way at the receiver. Note that reverse polarity will not damage your equipment, but the Polk in-wall speakers may not operate at all, and at best, performance will suffer. Perform step #12 before moving on to the next speaker.

12. Attach each speaker to its housing.

As described in the Polk in-wall speakers kit instructions, attach each speaker to the housing unit. Then, install the finishing grille, and clean around the speaker as necessary.

13. Finish the job.

Repeat steps #11 and #12 for each speaker, and then connect them all to the receiver. Have fun!
