California is known the world over for its beaches, warm weather and occasional natural disasters. California is the center of the American entertainment industry, and every year people flock there from all over the country to make their fortune modeling, acting, singing or directing. California is also the home of several fine art schools, which teach a great deal more than just painting and drawing. Modern art schools are considerably high-tech, with many offering concentrations in animation and visual effects, game design and digital media. Some art schools also offer programs in the performing arts as well.

California College of the Arts

California College of the Arts has both graduate and undergraduate programs in a large number of artistic fields. Students can study photography, sculpture, ceramics and illustration, as well as animation, printmaking, writing, architecture, film, glass and even furniture. CCAL has summer study abroad programs for both bachelor’s and master’s students. Literature students can study in Argentina, while architecture majors can go to Greece. Interdisciplinary students have the most choice, and can go to Chengdu, China; Guatemala; several cities in Italy; or Oaxaca, Mexico. The college also has a concentration in art education, and transfer credits for some courses can be gained by scoring a three or higher on the advanced placement exam for that course.

Academy of Art University

The Academy has courses of study in animation, fashion, motion pictures and television, music for visual media and web design, as well as art education, illustration and photography. It also has continuing education classes, pre-college programs for high school students and foundations classes.

San Francisco Art Institute

The San Francisco Art Institute offers a number of courses of study, undergraduate and graduate programs, organized into four centers for art research and investigation: the Center for Art+Science, the Center for Media Culture, the Center for Word, Text and Image, and the Center for Public Practice. Undergraduate students can major in urban studies or the history and theory of contemporary art, while graduate students can also pursue a master’s in exhibition and museum studies. SFAI also has a summer master of fine arts degree and a post-baccalareate certificate in the fine arts.

California Institute of the Arts

Perhaps the most famous California art school of the California Institute of the Arts, often just called CalArts. CalArts has a huge number of programs and degrees in all areas of art, including a writing program, dance, film and video, and theater. The Herb Alpert School of Music has a number of programs in music, including African music and dance, North Indian music, voice, winds, world music, harp, brass and guitar. Competition for admission is fierce, and the school requires transcripts, letters of recommendation, an artist’s statement, portfolio and/or audition before a student is accepted.
