Colleges In Ga - Highly-Ranked Colleges in Georgia - University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Oglethorpe University, Morehouse College

Though it does not often get the credit for it, Georgia is home to a number of fine and highly-rated colleges and universities. The Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia made US News and World Report’s Best National Universities list for 2010, and Morehouse, Spelman, Oglethorpe and Agnes Scott were also chosen as being among the best liberal arts colleges.

University of Georgia

The University of Georgia is a large school offering bachelor and master degrees and doctorates. Founded in 1785, it was the first state-charted university in the United States. The campus has 388 buildings and spends almost $350 million dollars per year on research. The school also has over 600 registered student organizations, and has produced 21 Rhodes Scholars.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Tech is another top research university, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in computing, engineering, sciences, architecture, management and even liberal arts. In addition to being ranked the #7 public school in the country, US News and World Report also ranked Georgia Tech as the #1 industrial engineering program. The college takes pride in its diverse student population, and has also been ranked #1 in engineering bachelor and doctoral degree given to African-American students, and #2 in master’s degrees.

Oglethorpe University

Oglethorpe is a small liberal arts college located in Atlanta. Founded in 1835, the college admits about 1,000 new students every year. In addition to undergraduate programs and a masters program in teaching, Oglethorpe also has non-credit courses for the community at large in subjects like dancing, yoga, wine appreciation and photography. Language classes in Italian, Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese, French and Spanish are open to the public as well. It also offers evening degree programs in liberal studies and business administration for working adults.

Morehouse College

Morehouse College has historically been a college for African-American men. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an alumni of Morehouse, as were Maynard Jackson, the first black mayor of Atlanta, and health care pioneer and Surgeon General of the United States David Satcher. Morehouse has majors and programs in business administration, the humanities, and science and mathematics. Fourteen of the school’s sixteen academic departments have honors programs, and 75% of Morehouse students do volunteer work in the community.

Agnes Scott College

Agnes Scott College is a liberal arts university for women. The school is quite small, with only 881 students enrolling the fall of 2009. The university has a low student-teacher ratio, and students from Agnes Scott have become Rhodes Scholars and attained Goldwater, Fulbright and Pickering Fellowships. Admissions to Agnes Scott is competitive, with less than half of the students who apply being accepted.

Spelman College

Spelman College has historically been a liberal arts college for African-American women. Spelman was founded in 1881, and offers majors in biochemistry, environmental science, math, drama, French and economics, among others. The student-teacher ratio at Spelman is 12:1, and 80% of the faculty hold Ph.Ds.
