Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier - Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier Pushes Sharper Image into Bankruptcy

purifiers suit health ozone

If you are thinking of buying an air purifier for health-related reasons, you should probably think again. The air-purifier industry was called out in 2005 by Consumer Reports magazine and since then, Sharper Image Corporation has taken most of the heat for its Ionic Breeze line of air purifiers that includes the Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier.

Consumer reports tests showed that the Ionic Breeze and many similar air purifiers do not significantly purify the air in any way. In fact, these air purifiers are actually more harmful to people because they displace oxygen and release ozone in its stead. Sharper Image had tried, unsuccessfully to sue the magazine for libel, but their suit was dismissed and they were ordered to pay $525,000 to Consumer Reports for court costs.

After 2 million Sharper Image Quadra Air Purifiers were sold at rates of up to $350 each, a class-action suit involving 3.2 million customers was brought against the company. Sharper Image claimed the Ionic Breeze and its other air purifiers were helpful to those suffering from allergies and asthma. They also used the seals of the British Allergy Foundation and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America on its boxing. After the suit, Sharper Image closed their mouths but did not take back their earlier claims. They did, however, remove both of the seals from their packaging.

After the suit, Sharper Image attempted to settle by providing those named with free merchandise and coupons for discounted merchandise from its stores. One of the coupons was for a $32 discount on an ozone filter attachment for the Ionic Breeze purifiers. Studies, however, still showed that even with the attachment, the purifiers emitted ozone.

Needless to say, the settlement was rejected and the case still remains in litigation. Soon after the rejection of the settlement, Sharper Image announced that it was filing for bankruptcy. Their Chapter 11 filing was followed by the closing of 90 stores, but it continues to conduct business. The online division of the company, SharperImage.com, has separated itself from its parent company. Although they now sell another line of air purifier, a link on the website for more information on Ionic Breeze purifiers leads to a statement saying they are not affiliated with The Sharper Image Corporated and they have nothing to do with the Ionic Breeze line of products.

This disaster for Sharper Image has not stopped retailers from selling the supplies of the product they had already purchased. The Sharper Image Ionic Breeze purifiers remain on sale at Amazon. The popular online retail website also shows that the purifier has 11 5-star reviews as compared to 6 1-star reviews. In addition to being sold on Amazon, Ionic Breeze air purifiers are still sold online by office supply giant, Office Depot. Specific models include an Ionic Breeze floor model, selling for $154.99 and the Ionic Breeze Desktop Air Purifier, listed at $149.99. Descriptions from Office Depot do not make any claims of health benefits.

As a final note, no doctor has ever recommended the use of an air purifier for people suffering from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory ailments. Air purifiers should not be used for health-related purposes. Professional treatment is required from a licensed health professional.
