La Quinta Motels - History and Features of La Quinta Motels

La Quinta Inn & Suites is a chain of motel/hotels that serve clients throughout North America, from Canada to Mexico. It is a mid-priced chain comparable to Comfort, Hampton, and Best Western inns.

Founders Sam and Phil Barshop built the first La Quinta Inn in 1968 to provide lodging to visitors of the HemisFair Worlds Fair. His mission, which still holds true for the franchise today, was to provide moderately priced lodging for commercial business travelers. The brothers were no strangers to real estate, having already built and leased hotels for the Ramada Inn.

The franchise spread quickly throughout Texas as the brothers Barshop sold rights and shared business philosophies with third party hoteliers who wished to profit from the La Quinta name. The key to its growth was in the undercutting of competitors costs by doing without the, by then, standard amenities of swimming pools, elaborate lounges, and other costly additions to the core need of having a clean place to hang one’s hat.

The management of La Quinta motels changed gradually over the next few decades, seeing the withdrawal of Phil Barshop and the selling of stock. By the mid 1980s, more than 170 La Quinta motels were established across the U.S., with a net income of roughly $6 million. The recession of the late 80s slowed growth considerably, but La Quinta weathered the storm to broach $272 million in ’93.

In 2010, La Quinta motels are the #2-ranked hospitality chain in the United States according to a survey conducted by Business Travel News magazine. The survey measured appearance, staff, room quality, food quality, and overall value. Modern day La Quinta president Wayne Goldberg maintains that business travelers remain “a very important segment of our business,” staying true to the principles set forth by the Barshops a half century prior.

La Quinta motels and hotels vary in price and amenities depending on the location, particularly since sites are operated by both third party and corporate hoteliers. La Quinta motels will either be listed as “La Quinta Inn” or “La Quinta Inn & Suites,” with the “& Suites” referring to the presence of two-room suites with microwaves, refrigerators, and a recliner or sofa. Features which can be expected at most La Quinta lodgings include:

  • High speed internet
  • Standard, double, or king-sized beds
  • 25” or 27” TV
  • Local calling
  • Hair drier
  • Coffee maker
  • Well-lit desk
  • Free breakfast
  • Handicap accessible rooms
  • Non-smoking rooms
  • Free lodging for children under 18 in a parent’s room
