Boston is not only the largest city and capital of Massachusetts, but it is a center of U.S. culture and history. As such, Boston hosts a number of tourists. It is listed as one of the top ten tourist destinations in the United States with tourists spending nearly $8 billion in the city annually.

There is no lack of hotels and accommodations in Boston, but many visitors are looking for a something beyond the average chain hotel. When tourists come to the city for the history, they want to stay in an historic hotel in an historic location. One hotel that fits this bill is the Fairmont Copley in Boston. This hotel has played host to every U.S. President to hold office since its opening and a fair number of foreign dignitaries and royalty.

The Fairmont Copley Plaza first opened amid a gala of fanfare in 1912. It is located in beautiful Copley Square near the John Hancock Tower at the former site of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The Fairmont Copley in Boston was named after the great American painter, John Singleton Copley. The architect, Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, also designed a sister hotel in New York, the Plaza Hotel. Today, the Fairmont Copley is owned and managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts.

Each of the Fairmont Copley’s 383 rooms and 17 suites are individually decorated to accommodate the lavish lifestyle of many of its regular guests. The lavish décor for each standard room was chosen to reflect Boston’s Back Bay at the turn-of-the-century while providing all the conveniences of the modern world. After the standard rooms, there are four more tiers available for guests:

• Deluxe rooms offer more space than the standard rooms with 360 to 400 sq/ft. They come with king bed or two double bed options. Room amenities include marble bathrooms, 32” flat-screen TVs, iPod docking station, and refreshment center. Rates average $459 per night.

• Signature rooms have a king bed and 410 sq/ft of space. They offer a quiet view of the hotel courtyard. All other amenities are identical to deluxe rooms. The average rate is $479 per night.

• One-Bedroom suites are much larger than single rooms, having 950 sq/ft of space. These two-room suites feature a bedroom and living room that is perfect for having guests. All furnishings are custom-made and include authentic antiques. These suites are located on the St. James Avenue side of the building and offer views of Copley Square, Trinity Church, and the Boston Library. Rates average $629 per night.
• Presidential and Signature suites are at the pinnacle of hotel accommodations. The Presidential Suite offers 1200 sq/ft of space and consists of three rooms. The bedroom has a hand-carved, four-poster bed and chaise longue. The living room features a fireplace and marble foyer. The dining room seats ten. Also included are a service kitchenette and 1-3/4 bathrooms.

The Signature Suites are themed suites and celebrate a single aspect of Boston history or culture. These suites are the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum Suite, Museum of Science Suite, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops Suite, Museum of Fine Arts Suites, Freedom Trail Suite, Boston Public Library Suite, and the Sports Museum Suite. Rates start at $679 per night and go up from there.

Dining at the Fairmont Copley Boston is provided by The Oak Room. Boston Magazine named The Oak Room the best steakhouse in the city. Award-winning dishes are served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Adjacent to the restaurant is the Oak Bar, specializing in martinis but serving drinks of all sorts.

For meetings and events, the Fairmont Copley Boston offers eight meeting rooms with a total of 20,000 sq/ft of space. The Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to 1,100 people in a luxurious setting perfect for meetings, banquets, weddings, or other special events.
