Social Security Name Change - How to Submit a Social Security Name Change

card office certificate mail

Going through a name change was once done only by women after they get married. In today’s society, some people change names like they are hairstyles. Men can change their name after a marriage. That’s only fair. Sometimes both the bride and groom change their name to a combination name or a “neutral” name that they have always admired. You can change your name as they try to become an entertainer, and other people do it because they are trying to hide from someone.

No matter the reason for changing your name in the United States, it is recommended to submit a Social Security name change. This is important for several reasons if you want to live a comfortable and regular life. Most states require you to process a Social Security name change before you can change it on your license. Your names must also match when you file your taxes. Banks can deny you if you attempt to open an account when your name is different than what is stated on your Social Security card. Changing your name with Social Security also assures that your earnings are being reported correctly, which will be important when you begin to receive benefits.

A Social Security name change is not difficult. You can submit the name change in person at your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office, or you can mail it to your local office. Your nearest office can be found on the official SSA website. You will need to gather all of the necessary documents required for the change. The documents you submit must be originals or certified copies. They will be returned to you at the window or by mail, if you submit your application by mail.

1. Form SS-5, Application For A Social Security Card must be completed. This form can be obtained at your local Social Security office, or it can be downloaded and printed online here.

2. Even if you live in a state where name changes can be made by assumption, you still must provide a legal authorization or declaration of the name change. This legal document can be any of the following:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Divorce document
  • Court order
  • Amended birth certificate

3. You must be able to prove your identity. This proof is usually in the form of government issued identification. The following are acceptable:

  • Driver’s license
  • State ID card
  • Military ID
  • Passport
  • Work Authorization card
  • Permanent Residence card

If none of these are available to you, in some cases, the Social Security office may accept these secondary forms of identification, but they are not required to do so:

  • School ID card
  • Employer ID card
  • Health insurance card

4. Citizenship is not required to obtain a Social Security card or a Social Security name change, but if you are claiming to be a citizen, you must show one of these documents as proof:

  • U.S. birth certificate
  • Consular report of birth
  • U.S. passport
  • Naturalization or Citizenship certificate

Once your name change is processed, it is usually updated in the computer system the same day. You will receive a new Social Security card with your new name in the mail two to three weeks later.
