People who suffer from depression and anxiety symptoms often describe the experience as having two separate beings constantly fighting each other within the same body. While depression and anxiety are two independent conditions, they often go together even though they appear to be exact opposites. Studies have shown that over 60 percent of those diagnosed with major depression were also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. Based upon the fact that they are so commonly diagnosed together, depression and anxiety are referred to as the fraternal twins of mood disorders.

Dealing with either depression or anxiety symptoms on their own can be disabling to normal life patterns. But when the two disorders are combined, they can be extremely hard to diagnose, hard to live with and difficult to treat. In order to deal with a combination of depression and anxiety, it is important to know the psychological and physical symptoms associated with each condition and understand how these symptoms often overlap. Here are the major symptoms exhibited when a person is dealing with both depression and anxiety.

Exhaustion: While this is a major symptom of depression, it is intensified when combined with anxiety to the point of being debilitating. Severe exhaustion can make preforming even the most basic daily tasks very difficult. At the same time, the anxiety symptoms of fear and panic are present which leads to even lower energy levels. This, in turn, affects the motivation levels needed to address the anxiety symptoms, which then leaves a person in a no-win situation that contributes to a deeper state of exhaustion.

Disrupted Sleep Patterns: This symptom is common to both depression and anxiety. Depression usually leads to a person sleeping too much, but the influence on the brain of anxiety symptoms will more likely cause a pattern of sleeping two hours or less per night. In many cases, sleep patterns are disrupted due to vivid or recurring dreams which cause distress that further deepens the feelings of fear and panic.

Appetite Loss: A persons appetite level normally declines when a body is under stress due to the symptoms of exhaustion, fear, panic and a feeling of depressed self-worth. This compounds the problem of dealing with the symptoms due to the lower energy levels that result from less nourishment in the body. While depression and anxiety symptoms are not rooted in diet, they cannot be properly addressed without counteracting a loss of appetite.

Loss of Sex Drive: Due to the emotional state of mind caused by either depression or anxiety, there is often a drop in the desire for sexual activity. This can then lead to feelings of guilt which reinforces the anxiety symptoms and sense of worthlessness that a person is already struggling with.

Isolation: Wanting to shut out or avoid the outside world is common due to the exhaustion and lack of self-worth brought on by depression and the symptoms of panic and fear arising from anxiety. A lack of self-worth usually makes a person feel awkward or uncomfortable around others, which leads to a further downward spiral of the depression. Unfortunately, the counter influence of anxiety symptoms will cause people to remain even more isolated because they become panicked that a terrible event in the outside world could occur at any time.

Agitation: The fear and panic associated with anxiety symptoms usually leaves a person feeling highly agitated about life in general. It is not uncommon for a series of anxiety attacks to arise without warning which can lead to a racing heartbeat, trembling of the hands and constant pacing. Once these symptoms occur, the depression is then deepened due to a renewed sense of having any lack of control over the situation.

The symptoms of both depression and anxiety are normally treated with a combination of antidepressant medication and behavioral therapy. A good treatment program should also include the maintenance of a healthy diet and an exercise program that encourages interaction with other people to overcome the symptom of isolation.
