13 × 19 Paper – The CAD Designer’s Best Friend
Engineering design is created entirely with software known as CAD or AutoCAD, the acronym for Computer Aided Design. When it’s time for project start-up, the only reliable directions for fabricators and installation project managers are the design prints. This is usually done on wide format paper in sizes that are 11 × 17 or 13 × 19. Although 11 × 17 is the size of design print paper used more often, in cases where CAD or AutoCAD designs are particularly complex and/or contain unusual design details, the choice of 13 × 19 paper serves the better purpose.

Paper Weight For 13 × 19
As with most paper needs, the weights of paper in design work can be extremely important. 13 × 19 paper is available in weights from 39 lb up to 57 lb as well as the standard 24 lb. for large prints. Bear in mind that 24 lb. paper is slightly heavier than ordinary office copier paper. Another factor in use of heavier paper weight for 13 × 19 paper is handling. A heavier weight paper avoids curling, wrinkling and crimping as a result of constant handling.

To give an example of the difference in paper weight for 13 × 19 paper, consider that the standard paper weight for ordinary standard size 8 1/2 × 11 inch paper is 16 lb. The 47 lb. paper weight is similar to standard lightweight card stock. 57 lb. paper weight is equal to cover stock of 80 lb. weight. Thus, 13 × 19 paper with a weight of 39 lbs. would necessarily be much heavier in paper weight. The reason for this is that AutoCAD and CAD software must clearly define in greater detail each aspect of a structure or piece of equipment. Most of this software now presents design work in color to make it far easier to read design drawings.

For example, a simple ductwork design may have several connecting lengths in various configurations from absolute horizontal to curves. The colors help define the connections as well as the types and sizes of the materials needed for installation. If printed on a lesser paper weight, the wide format final print could result in “bleed through” resolution making the drawing smudged or impossible to read.

13 × 19 Paper For Sectionalized Drawings
When it comes to design drawings, 13 × 19 paper serves another purpose. In many cases where the most complex and largest designs need to be created in sections, 13 × 19 paper is ideal for what are known as half drawings. This size paper allows installers to see the specifics of a particular aspect of equipment or structure. It also accommodates more adequately the ability to share the drawing cross-sections with multiple project installation crews.

13 × 19 – Yet Another Use
Design drawings are not the only instance where 13 × 19 paper is the most convenient. 13 × 19 paper has set a place in the photographic industry for wide format printing of photographic projects particularly in regular commercial use. With the use of a wide format printer digital photos are easily printed to this paper size. For professional looking photos, this size is available in a wide range of paper textures such as glossy, matte and even parchment. Photos printed to 13 × 19 matte paper have a portrait appearance while photos printed on glossy have a great commercial appeal.

Choosing The Right 13 × 19 Paper Brightness
Given the wide range of colors that are part of design drawing or photographic resolutions, the color scale for 13 × 19 paper can also be fairly important. For photographic printing where colors have wider variety, the brightness of the paper plays an important role in the final print result. For design work where print colors are minimal with reds, blues and greens as the key color indicators, a brighter color paper is more feasible. Bright white is usually the standard. For photographic printing, the brightness of the paper may be determined more by the type of photo to be printed. This is true in portrait or group photos where facial flaws need to be obscured.
