Garmin is one of the top manufacturers of GPS devices. The company was founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Dr. Min Kao. Both were employees of King Radio, the company responsible for developing the first GPS navigation system certified by the FAA for use in aircraft.

With only a handful of engineers and a minimal staff, Garmin’s utilized the concept of vertical integration to develop a line of navigation products that quickly took hold of mainstream consumers. By 2000, the company had grown to 1,000 employees and 6 years after that, 4,000 employees. But that was still not enough to handle worldwide sales and development, so they expanded to 7,000 employees in 2007.

Today, Garmin’s products span all lifestyles with this complete product set:

  • Auto Navigation
  • Marine Navigation
  • Aviation Technology
  • Fitness Electronics
  • Outdoor Sporting
  • Wireless Applications
