Corpus Christi Vacation - Going on a Corpus Christi Vacation

Corpus Christi is the large city on the Gulf Coast of Texas. It is only the eighth-largest city in Texas, with a population of 285,175, but it is the second-largest city when it comes to tourism. Corpus Christi is known as “The Sparkling City by the Sea” because of the city lights that twinkle off the waters of its many beaches. A Corpus Christi vacation gives visitors a chance to enjoy the beautiful Texas Coastal Bend and take part in additional cultural and entertaining attractions of the city.

The biggest reasons why a Corpus Christi vacation is so popular is the climate of the city. While the summers are hot and humid, the spring and autumn remain warm and inviting. The lows in December and January are in the high forties, and freezing weather is extremely rare. Many summer visitors stay near the beaches where the ever-present wind blowing in from the Gulf helps cool down the temperature by a couple of degrees.

The main attraction of the city is its beach and island beach access. Very few people on a Corpus Christi vacation will miss out on the beaches. The city beaches face northeast toward the Corpus Christi Bay. The Corpus Christi Beach and McGee Beach offer other amenities, such as shopping and some of the best seafood restaurants in Texas. Other attractions are also located near the city beaches:

  • USS Lexington – A decommissioned WWII aircraft carrier turned museum.
  • Harbor Bridge
  • Texas State Aquarium – Observe Gulf of Mexico sea life in its native habitat.
  • McGee Beach Pier – has concessions, a restaurant, gift shop, and great fishing.
There are plenty of restrooms, showers, and picnic areas near most areas of the beach. Additionally, many hotel resorts and condominiums are nearby. During the peak season, umbrellas and beach chairs will be available to rent for the day in most areas. The northern end of the beach is the most primitive, but a great place for a quiet walk.

The island beaches are much more popular than the city beaches. The island beaches are more of an intracoastal waterway/barrier island, and they are accessible by car. The island beaches are park areas and excellent for camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, and biking. Beyond campground facilities with water and electric hookups, bathrooms, and showers, there are few other amenities. The island beaches include the following:

  • Mustang Island State Park
  • JP Luby Surf Park
  • Packery Channel
  • South Packery Jetty Beach
  • Upper Padre Island
  • Windward Beach
  • Padre Island
  • Whitecap Beach

A Corpus Christi Vacation does not have to be all about the beaches. The city also has several other attractions for tourists and visitors:

  • Municipal Marina – Many a boating adventure or fishing expedition begins here.
  • Heritage Park – A collection of historic homes.
  • The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail – A highway along the coast dedicated to bird watching.
  • Botanical Garden – Walking trails amid tropical flowers, roses, and 2,500 different types of orchids.

There are three major ways to begin a Corpus Christi vacation: by car, by bus, and by plane. Corpus Christi is at the southern portion of I-37, so the city is easy to get to by car. It is about a two hour drive south from San Antonio. Bus service is provided by Greyhound. Flights are available from Corpus Christi International Airport, but many people choose to fly into San Antonio, where airline tickets are less expensive. From San Antonio, buses, a train, or rental cars are all options in reaching Corpus Christi.

Once inside the city, those who have planned a Corpus Christi vacation have several options for accommodations. Hotels are available on and off shore for every budget, from roadside motel to 5-star resort. In addition, vacation rentals are available of all sorts: beach houses, town homes, cottages, single-family houses, multi-bedroom homes, and condominiums.
