Wizard Of Oz Toys - Collecting Wizard of Oz Toys

movie dolls available witch

The Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved American movies in the history of filmmaking. The movie was first released in 1939. It was directed by Victor Fleming, written by a team led by Noel Langley, and starred Judy Garland, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, and Ray Bolger. The original story was based on a children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard Oz, written by L. Frank Baum in 1900.

The Wizard of Oz was renowned for being one of the first movies to use Technicolor and for its original fantasy storyline which involved a young farm girl and her dog transported by a tornado to a magical land “over the rainbow.” There, she befriends a Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion while fending off an evil witch on a quest to get back home. The brilliant story teaches us that we all have inside us what is necessary to be a whole and complete person, and that “there’s no place like home.” “Over the Rainbow” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the movie received several other nominations, but it would not be for years to come until it was considered a success.

Television broadcasts beginning in 1956 helped to popularize the movie. Beginning in 1959, the airing of the movie became an annual event for CBS that was hosted by some of the top entertainers of the time. By the time the annual broadcasts ended in 2008, four generations of fans had come to love the movie and whole lines of collectible Wizard of Oz toys had been created.

While many collectible Wizard of Oz toys are no longer in production, there are still several that continue to be marketed by Warner Brothers and sold directly via the Warner Brothers online merchandise store and at retail outlets across the country. The most popular Wizard of Oz toys have been and continue to be dolls and figurines. Other movie merchandise cannot really be categorized as Wizard of Oz toys as they are more of Wizard of Oz novelties. Here are some of the different products currently available:

Barbie Dolls
Official Wizard of Oz Barbie Dolls have been created for Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, and for Glinda the Good Witch. The Barbie Doll set features all three characters in their movie outfits. They are sold separately for $35 to $55 at popular traditional toy stores and online.

Mattel Dolls
Mattel has a popular line of Wizard of Oz toys in their set of character dolls from the movie. These dolls are made for play or display. They stand 12 inches to 14 inches high and sell for $39 to $65. There is one big downside to this doll collection: many of them are not balanced to stand on their own, and they are often displayed holding accessories that they cannot hold as shown. These characters are currently available for sale: Dorothy, Glinda, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Wicked Witch, and a Winkie Guard and Flying Monkey set.

Stylish Dolls
Warner Brothers markets an updated line of Wizard of Oz toys that includes popular female characters in updated fashion styles. There different Dorothy dolls are available: one in a mini-skirt and high-stockings, another in a 50s-style poodle dress, and another in her traditional outfit.
