Jefferson City is the capital of city of Missouri and the county seat of Cole County, although part of the city is located in Callaway County. It is located in the approximate center of the state, just south of the Missouri River and just north of the Ozarks. Its geographic location was one of the primary reasons the city was made the state capital. The area was first “discovered” by Lewis and Clark as they passed through in 1804 during their famous expedition. Settlers soon followed, and in 1821, while still little more than a trading post, it was chosen as the state capital. It was five years before the government convened in the city and it was not until 1836 when Jefferson City was officially incorporated. Today, the city’s status as state capital is still its main claim to fame.

As of the 2000 census, the population of Jefferson City is 39,636. There are 15,794 households in the city occupying 16,987 total Jefferson City home units. Even though there is a discrepancy in occupied homes of over 1,200 units, the Jefferson City home market only averages 250 homes for sale at any given time. The median price of homes sold in the city is $150,000 and the average listing price is around $170,000. Although the city has been affected by the 2006 mortgage crises, the foreclosure rate in Jefferson City is so low as to be practically non-existent. However, the median housing price has been greatly affected, as it was over $240,000 in 2006.

The cultural, social, and racial diversity in Jefferson City is low, with most residents being either white (82%) or black (15%). The remaining 3% of people are Asian and other ethnicities. 44% of households are comprised of married couples with and without children. The age demographic is equally spread with 43% of the population aged 18 to 44 and 36% of the population being over 45. Bucking the usual trend, there are more males than females. The ratio is 105 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over. The median household income is $39,628.

Most of the people who own a Jefferson City home are in some way involved with or doing business with the state or county government. The economy of the city is run by government jobs with 28,000 positions currently filled. The next-largest industry in the city is agriculture, with corn, soybeans, and wheat all being major crops. Smaller industries include manufacturing and steel fabrication, although retail businesses are on the rise.

One major complaint of those how own a Jefferson City home is a lack of an Interstate highway in the city. The nearest one is I-70, which is 30 miles to the north. This makes Jefferson City one of only four state capitals in the U.S. to suffer from this disconnection. Although there is no Interstate, the city is served by three U.S. highways: US-50, US-54, and US-63. For long-distance transportation, Jefferson City has a small memorial airport just north of the river, and it is a major stop on an Amtrak route.

The educational needs of the city are supported by the Jefferson City Public School District, which is comprised of 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and a single high school. In addition, there are 4 private elementary schools and 7 private high schools. For higher education, Columbia College has a Jefferson City campus and Lincoln University is one known as an excellent institution that has historically served the black community.
