South Lake Tahoe Vacations - What to do on Your South Lake Tahoe Vacation

summer home choose activities

One of the most popular places in the world to visit is a place where you can snow ski in the winter (and sometimes in the summer) and go boating, swimming and water skiing in the summer. Everyone that comes home from this place cannot stop talking about their South Lake Tahoe vacations. Modest motels, many different restaurants and mountain-side cottages make up the lakeside’s largest community. South Lake Tahoe is also located close to the Nevada/California border. So, if you lose your money at the slot machines or tables in Reno or Las Vegas, maybe you should take a break and head to South Lake Tahoe for some beautiful hiking trails, parks and beaches.

When planning your South Lake Tahoe vacation, there are several types of accommodations to choose from. South Lake Tahoe is packed with motels, hotels, resorts, cabins and even some campgrounds. Most vacationers pick a private cabin as a vacation rental. This way, you are able to pick what area around the lake you wish to stay and you have all the privacy of being at home. Whether you prefer being right on the lake with access out of your front door or high up on a mountain top with spectacular and breathtaking views, South Lake Tahoe has many locations to choose from to make your vacation spot perfect for you. Still, while the cabins are more popular, some choose to vacation, resort style. Many of the resorts offer amenities such as boat rentals, ski rentals and lessons, restaurants, spas and many more.

People call Lake Tahoe “America’s All Year Playground”. This is because there are so many different activities to participate in throughout the year. Spring and summer in South Lake Tahoe means golf, river rafting, fishing, camping, boating, biking, hiking, ballooning and just being around the beautiful lake. Some of the other summer activities can include parasailing, kayaking and jet skiing. Summer months boast better weather for things such as sunset dinner cruises. These cruises offer a wonderful combination of dining, dancing and sightseeing. One of the most popular vacation activities to participate in is golfing. South Lake Tahoe offers some of the most scenic and challenging golf courses in the world. If you are a big golf fan, try and plan your vacation around the NBC Sports American Century Celebrity Golf Championship. The tournament has featured celebrities such as Charles Barkley, Tony Romo, Michael Jordan and Ray Romano in the past. This event typically occurs every July.

Winter activities can include skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. There are 15 alpine and 13 cross country ski areas to choose from. Another interesting activity that you can take part in during the winter months is a sleigh ride. You can choose to take a private ride in a cozy two-seater or a twenty-five passenger sleigh. All of the sleighs are equipped with warm blankets and spectacular views of South Lake Tahoe.

Of course there are many beautiful scenic points to gaze at when you visit South Lake Tahoe. Just like most places, however, there is more! Vikingsholm is a castle that is located at the head of Emerald Bay. It was built in 1929 as a summer home for Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight. Lora Knight is known for her generous contribution to youth groups in California and Nevada. She also aided young people by helping them pay for school so they could get the education they needed. Mostly, however, Mrs. Knight is remembered for her summer home. Today, you can visit the castle and tour the inside. Right off the shore of the summer home, there is an island with a small house on top where she used to serve afternoon tea on occasion. This is also accessible to tourists, but only by boat.

Another fun landmark that is a must see at Lake Tahoe is the Fleur du Lac. The Fleur du Lac is a summer estate that was built by Henry J. Kaiser in 1939. It is most famous because it was used in the making of the movie “The Godfather II”. Unfortunately, shortly after the movie was made, someone else purchased the home and demolished the original home to make room for a condominium development. There are, however, still some structures standing on the property that were used in the film. This home is now private, but you can see the property from the lake and take photos.
