The HealthAmerica Insurance Company provides health insurance to over 500,000 members in Pennsylvania and Ohio. HealthAmerica is one of the top 20 health plans in America, according to U.S. News in its 2009-10 listing of Best Health Insurance Plans. Health America Insurance offers traditional health insurance products, along with managed care, self-funded, Medicare, indemnity plans, non-group (individual insurance plans), and pharmacy plans.

HealthAmerica’s corporate offices are in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They provide group insurance coverage to 11,000 businesses in their service area, and offers medical management and innovative wellness programs. HealthAmerica’s Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Point of Service (POS), and Medicare Advantage plans are top ranked and are accredited through the National Committee for Quality Insurance (NCQA).

NCQA also rates managed care plans on access to care and quality of network. HealthAmerica rated number one in more categories than other plans in Pennsylvania, and were rated overall above the national average.

History of HealthAmerica Insurance

HealthAmerica Insurance began operations in 1975 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Healthplans Corporation of Nashville merged with HealthAmerica in 1984, making them the largest independent health maintenance organization in the U.S. In 1988 HealthAmerica was purchased by Coventry Health Care, one of the largest insurance companies in America.

HealthAmerica Products

HealthAmerica’s innovative solution to consumer-directed health plans is its Coventry Consumer Choice (C3) plan. This single source advantage is administered by HealthAmerica, utilizing its member services and claims payment expertise.

Employers and members get a single source for medical management, administration of claims, and customer care services. Members of HealthAmerica can access assistance and information that will enable them to stay healthy by making educated health care decisions.

Other advantages of HealthAmerica’s C3 program include automatic reimbursement of pharmacy claims. With the C3 advantage, any reimbursement for medical care due to the member can either be paid directly to the member, or saved in an account for future health care costs and expenses. There are Coventry Consumer Coaches that assist members in resolving and understanding complex medical management questions or problems.

Easy to use online tools help members make smart choices about their healthcare, and estimate health care costs.

Employer Options

HealthAmerica Insurance specializes in group health insurance plans for businesses. They provide a range of health plans at costs that meet employer and employee needs. Health care plans are comprehensive, and the HMO product has no deductibles or lifetime maximums. Copayments for preventive care such as check-ups and physicals are low, and members can access care from a large network of primary care doctors, specialists, hospitals, and ancillary care providers.

Employers can choose from coverage plans that include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Point of Service Options (POS), and Preferred Provider Options (PPO). Members can choose to stay within the network of participating providers, or opt out of the network for health care.

There are also Health Savings Accounts where members can make decisions about how their tax-free health care dollars are spent. HealthAmerica offers self-funded plans for large companies, as well as health benefit plans with value-added services for the medium-sized and smaller companies.

If a company employs people who live outside of the area, the Coventry National Network is one of the largest networks in the country. There are over 4,700 participating hospitals in the network, and 490,000 participating providers of health care. All employees can be covered under one health insurance option.

Prescription Plans

HealthAmerica knows that prescriptions are not only beneficial to healthcare, but that they need to be cost-effective as well as high quality. The HealthAmerica prescription plan network includes most major pharmacy chains along with many independent pharmacies.

There are mail order programs for maintenance prescriptions. Specialty drug management and cost-control methods such as prior authorization all add up to a program that does not compromise quality of care.

Added Benefits

HealthAmerica offers members discounts on wellness services. Reimbursement of 100% for approved wellness classes that are offered through local hospitals and wellness organizations encourages members to take control of their overall health. Discounts are available on eyeglasses, contact lenses, and LASIK eye surgery. HealthAmerica also provides discounts on fitness club membership, acupuncture, and massages.

A HealthAmerica nurse hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Members can talk to a registered nurse with questions. The hotline is also available online.
