Sault Ste Marie Hotels - Hotels In Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

locks city soo popular

Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the city of Sault (commonly pronounced “Soo”) Ste Marie offers visitors an ample choice of hotels. There are over 30 hotels in the greater Sault Ste Marie area ranging in price from inexpensive economy rooms to up-scale luxury suites. A large majority of these hotels are conveniently located to the many attractions and shopping areas the town has to offer.

Many of the hotels are designed to reflect the rich historical and cultural heritage of the area. Promoted as “The Place Where Michigan Was Born”, Sault Ste Marie is the oldest city in Michigan and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Situated along Lake Superior right across the border from Canada, the area has been occupied by humans for thousands of years. Over the course of history, the land has been claimed at one time or another by several sovereign nations. During the 1800’s, the city was a popular destination for people suffering from allergies who found relief in the cool, clear breezes blowing off of Lake Superior. The influences on the area by early Native Americans and fur trappers can be found reflected in the architecture and room decor of several local hotels. Today, the area is a popular destination that features rushing waterfalls, rocky coastlines, thick forests, picturesque lighthouses and freshwater fishing.

A small number of hotels in Sault Ste Marie are close to, or directly overlook, the Soo Locks. One of the city’s major attractions, the Soo Locks were first built in 1837 to provide a way for large cargo ships to travel through the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The locks compensate for a 21 feet difference in slope along the river through a series of gated areas in which water levels are risen or lowered depending upon which direction the ships are heading. An average of 10,000 ships per year pass through the locks, except from January through March when ice on the Great Lakes hinders large cargo ship passage. The Sault Ste Marie International bridge allows traffic to pass over the locks between the United States and Canada. Most of the local hotels offer promotional information or discounts on the many narrated boat tours that take passengers through the locks right along side the big freighter ships.

There are two hotels of note in Sault Ste Marie. One is the the Ramada Plaza Ojibway Hotel, the oldest and most famous hotel in the city. The other is the Kewadin Casino Hotel, one of the newest and largest hotels in the area.

The Ramada Plaza Ojibway Hotel is recognized as an historical landmark in Sault Ste Marie. First opened on New Years Eve in 1927, this beautifully appointed building still retains its original character while overlooking the Soo Locks. It features over 100 guest rooms, a checkroom, dining room, barbershop and beauty parlor. The décor and Egyptian architecture are accented with detailed amenities that has make this hotel a very popular for travelers from throughout the world. Some of its more famous guests have included Joe Lewis, Jack Dempsey and President George Bush in 1992.

The Kewadin Hotel is owned and operated on the Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indian’s Reservation. Since its inception, this hotel has become one of the most popular places to stay in the area. It features a casino that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The hotel has 320 rooms that range from singles to luxury suites. The overall facility also includes a swimming pool, spa, fitness center, convention hall, concert theater and restaurants; including fine dining. Although it is a bit farther removed from the more populated areas of the city, the hotel does offer numerous shuttles to the Soo Locks and other area attractions.
