Sirius Radio Antenna - Sirius Radio Antenna - Selection and Installation

satellite signal reception installing

Sirius Satellite Radio Background
Sirius Satellite Radio is a commercial free, uncensored satellite radio provider currently streaming 135 channels of news, talk, sports, entertainment and music 24 hours a day to its subscribers. They have been in operation since 1997 after securing a broadcasting license from the Federal Communications Commission. They offer a number of subscription packages based on your needs.

A special satellite radio receiver and a Sirius radio antenna are required to receive the streaming content. It is the proprietary design of this antenna that permits the capturing of the Sirius satellite radio signal from their rotating terrestrial satellite or ground based repeaters. After receiving the signal, the receiver amplifies the signal and applies noise reduction filters. Terrestrial repeaters make possible uninterrupted satellite radio reception when the signal is unavailable or hard to get.
Customers using stationary Sirius antennas have experienced “satellite dish rain fade” in some locations around the United States and Canada due primarily to the Sirius satellite’s high elliptical orbit. Sirius responded to this issue with the launch of FM-5, a geostationary satellite, improving non-mobile service and eliminating the need to frequently reposition the antenna. The Sirius signal is also available to businesses with a high speed internet connection which eliminates reception issues. Those outside the continental United States will soon benefit from recently installed repeaters.

Installing a Sirius Radio Antenna
A Sirius radio antenna should be positioned at the highest available point to obtain superior reception however when the highest point is not available, there are specialized extensions and antennas designed specifically for these less favorable locations. (Note: Excellent satellite radio reception is available by doing a little homework. Before you purchase a receiver and antenna, consider the limitations of your satellite radio antenna location.)

When installing a Sirius radio antenna in an automobile, position it in the middle of the roof, just behind the front windshield. If this is not possible or undesirable, consider mounting it on an outside window. Running the antenna wire from the antenna to the receiver will require a length of at least 20 feet. Be sure to avoid metal screens which will adversely affect the signal. Before permanently securing the antenna, test reception in various locations and times of the day. Place the antenna away from a roof rack. Some manufacturers offer a magnetic mount for easy installation. The user’s manual will address details of the installation.

Installing a Sirius radio antenna in a home or office requires the antenna screens be directed up and to the south. The best spot is on the roof, positioning the antenna at least three inches away from other antennas. Most transmissions originate from satellites orbiting the earth in this location. The antenna may be mounted on the external wall of a building facing south. Situate the antenna so as to avoid signal blockage from the building. Avoid placing the antenna near an interior window with thermal insulation as this will interfere with the signal.
Whether installing a mobile or fixed Sirius satellite radio antenna, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve a clear, strong signal.
