San Diego Universities - San Diego is Home to a Range of Universities

San Deigo is a popular urban center in southern California that is home to a diverse population. It boasts a lovely climate, beautiful beaches, and various cultural activities year round. Therefore, it is no surprise that San Diego is home to many universities that cater to a wide range of students.

One of the most well known San Diego universities is San Diego State University. SDSU is the area’s oldest and largest institution of higher learning. Since the 1960s, it has been a part of the California State University system. SDSU is home to approximately 35,000 students. San Diego State University has become one of the most popular undergraduate destinations in the country, as evidenced by the vast number of applicants in the past few years. Since 2008, over 60,000 undergraduate students have applied to San Diego State University each year.

San Diego State University is particularly well known for its education, international business, biology, speech-language pathology, and public administration degrees. The university offers 85 undergraduate, 75 master’s, and 14 joint doctoral degrees. Sixty percent of SDSU’s graduates remain in the San Diego area, making it an important educator to the region’s work force.

The University of California, San Diego is another popular San Diego university. UCSD was founded in 1960, and it has since grown to be one of the nation’s best regarded research institutions. It is particularly well recognized for its positive influence on the San Diego region, the United States, and the global community at large. The school’s scholars are well known for scientific and medical breakthroughs, as well as their work in making UCSD one of the greenest universities in the nation.

Point Loma Nazarene University is another of San Diego’s lesser known universities. It is a small, selective liberal arts college founded on Christian principles. PLNU is home to around 2,500 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. Located just steps from the Pacific Ocean, PLNU offers location as one of its primary selling points, along with the strength of its staff and the values with which the campus is imbued. PLNU offers more than fifty areas of study and takes pride in its mission to “teach, shape, and send” its students.

San Diego Mesa College is the San Diego area’s most successful community college. It is part of the California community college system, which includes more than 110 colleges, of which Mesa college is one of the largest and most accomplished. SD Mesa College prides itself on delivering academic excellence and a highly personal experience for each of its students. Aside from academics, Mesa college offers a wide range of activities to enhance campus life, including intercollegiate athletic teams, student government, and numerous cultural activities on campus. Mesa College students typically transfer to schools in the California University system or other four year schools, where they excell due to competent preparation.

San Diego is home to a host of universities that suit the needs of a wide range of students.
