Lake Como Hotels - Lake Como Hotel--Romance and Grandeur

star bull villa tremezzo

Lake Como described as Italy’s Lake of Romance first by the Romans, then by the European aristocracy and poets of the 19th century, and today by all. Lake Como and the town of Como lie on the Milan to Switzerland train line; however, Ferrovia Nord Milano runs only between Como and Milan. From Milan’s Malpensa Airport, there is a train to Saronna where one transfers to the Como train.
Lake Como is shaped like an upside down ‘Y’, with the towns of Como and Lecco at the end of the SW and SE branches and Domaso and Colico at the Northern tip. If travelling from Como along the western shore of the SW branch notable towns are Cernobbio, Lenno, Tremezzo, and Menaggio or Bellagio on the eastern shore and provide a wide choice of Lake Como hotels.
Como makes a good base with a tourist office in scenic Piazza Cavour. In addition, the old walled town provides many attractions, shopping, restaurants, and beautiful waterfront Lake Como hotels or more centrally located accommodations.
• The Barchetta Excelsior, Metropole Suisse Au Lac, and the Hotel Terminus (all 4-star) are near Como’s lakeside promenade and its restaurants and shops.
• Three-star hotels are located nearer the center of Como closer to the rail stations but just minutes from the lake and boat docks. Good choices are the Hotel Como, Hotel Meublé, Hotel Tre Re, and Hotel Best Western.
• Two-star hotels, most about halfway between the station and lakeshore include Hotel Posta located in Piazza Volta and Hotel Quarcino with a private garden.
Venturing away from Como a popular choice is Bellagio at the juncture of the two branches and accessed bu road from Como or by ferry from Como, Menaggio, Tremezzo, and Varenna. Bellagio provides spectacular views of Lake Como and the Alps and the lively center of Bellagio has a blend of shops and restaurants to please all. Here Lake Como hotels include:
• Hotel Villa Serbelloni (5-star) in the heart of Bellagio’s center is one of the oldest and most luxurious of Lake Como hotels boasting restaurants, spacious rooms, and gardens.
• Hotel Belvedere (3-star) opened in 1880 has a private garden, pool, and restaurant; and Hotel Metropole (3-star) is a two-minute walk from the ferry and every room has a lake view.
• Hotel Excelsior Splendide (2-star) is in the center of Bellagio next to the ferry terminal.
An alternative to both Como and Bellagio for Lake Como hotels is Menaggio situated on the western shore of Lake Como and at the shore roads junction with the road to Lugano, Switzerland. Menaggio’s discovery by tourists in the early 19th century began the building of scenic Lake Como hotels in the grand style. Menaggio’s splendid lakeside promenade includes a large lido (beach), a sports center, and swimming pool. Lake Como hotels include:
• Grand Hotel Menaggio (4-star) facing the lake and next to the ferry and Grand Hotel Victoria (4-star) overlooking the lake and just an easy walk from Menaggio’s center.
• Hotel Du Lac (3-star) with a lake view is in Menaggio’s historic center.
• Lake Como, Hotel Miralago, Hotel Adler, and Hotel Loveno are good two star choices.
South of Menaggio is the Villa Carlota along the marked “Greenway” walk that one can begin (the end on the map) in Cadenabbia, the ferry landing for Tremezzo from Bellagio or Como. Along the mostly lakeside walk (6.5 miles or about 3.5 hr) are quaint villages, restaurants, small Chiese, and wonderful views.
Fortunately, Villa Carlota is in Tremezzo and Villa Balbianello is about 30 minutes farther south in Lenno. Both villas are beautiful. Villa Carlota is immense with magnificent “English” gardens while Balbianello is smaller but in a beautiful spot. Lake Como hotels along the way include:
• Grand Hotel Cadenabbia (4 star) right on the lake and main road is adjacent to Villa Carlotta. Hotel Britannia Excelsior (3-star) is very close to Cadenabbia’s dock.
• Palace Hotel (5-star) in Tremezzo, also next to Villa Carlotta, is an old hotel with elegant rooms and a private, floating pool on the lake. La Darsena Hotel (3-star) in Tremezzo is on the shore with a panoramic terrace and private dock.
• Hotel Villa Marie Tremezzo (2 star) with a terrace overlooking the lake is about five minutes from Villa Carlotta.
