South Padre Island Condos - Rent South Padre Island Condos for Vacation

port water mainland isabel

South Padre Island is the last island in the chain of barrier reef islands that line the Texas coast from Corpus Christi to Brownsville. Laguna Madre is the body of water between the island and the mainland and the south end is accessible by car by the Queen Isabella Causeway. While driving over the Causeway, the waves lap well below the roadway so that boats of all sizes can pass from the Lagoon into the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Whether the vacationer prefers the bayside or the beachfront location, South Padre Island condos are available year around with a brief hiatus during spring break season where most rentals are closed for renovation. While staying on the island, vacationers can enjoy: mainland locations, sightseeing, and unique activities.

Smaller locales like Port Isabel, Brownsville, and McAllen offer access to groceries, sports gear, and great places to purchase fresh seafood. All of these towns are greatly influenced by the Mexican culture and some of the best Mexican restaurants are within a brief driving distance from the vacation condo. Any medical needs can be addressed in the hospitals and medical clinics on the mainland. For the cultural explorer, many towns across the border are friendly to American travelers who would enjoy a day of walking through their shops of handmade goods. Speak to the many Mexicans who know English as well as you do and enjoy sharing stories and asking about their lifestyles. Before you drive back across the Causeway, stop at one of the many seafood stores in Port Isabel and pick up the day’s catch to prepare in your condo’s kitchen. The shop owners are happy to show you how to prepare the catch so that it tastes just as delicious as any restaurant could prepare.

Some points of interest are not to be missed. The historic Port Isabel lighthouse stands sentry on the mainland and is now a preserve that can be visited. In years past, the lighthouse guided ships safely through the channel from the open waters of the Gulf into the Intercoastal Waterway where ships have traveled in the safety of the bay waters behind the reef island for more than a century. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is located on the bay shore of the mainland north of Port Isabel and hundreds of species of birds find winter nesting grounds there. Take the time to walk through the parks in Port Isabel where the water birds often stop for a few days before heading further south for the winter. Use binoculars to get a close-up view of these majestic beauties.

For the most daring vacationer, parasailing, dolphin watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, and surfing ventures are available in the warmest months. Tamer ventures like deep sea fishing tours, the turtle sanctuary, and multiple places to find many species of birds are available for nominal fees. Weather does vary widely on Padre Island and has a tendency to cancel activities so flexibility is the best policy. A winter storm can bring seas so rough that even the most experienced fishermen will stay onshore and cancel all fishing tours. During hurricane season the occasional storm has been known to change the face of South Padre and cause major rebuilding projects to be undertaken. Outdoor activities abound for beachcombers and water sports enthusiasts. Small water craft are available for rent and are best used on the calmer waters of the bay. Venture into the Gulf of Mexico with experienced boating guides to prevent disaster.

South Padre Island condos are perfectly located with all the amenities of home. Spend the time to familiarize yourself with the Island shops and restaurants. Walk the beach and pick up shells and watch for oil tankers out on the horizon. While the weather may limit some activities out on the water, and the heat may keep you inside during the peak of the afternoon, the evenings are perfect for walking the beach and enjoying the waters of the Bay or the Gulf. Remember your camera and take enough pictures to tell the story when you return the northern climes. Learn all that you can about the unique wildlife in the area and try your hand at preparing some local seafood, and you will have a lifetime of memories.
