Having a remote desktop connection between two computers is a useful way to access programs and files remotely from another computer. For example, you can work from home or on the road and still be able to access documents and e-mail as if you were in the office. This is especially useful for those who work in sales or with customers and need constant access to files. A remote desktop connection is included with computers installed with a Windows XP Professional operating system. The computers that are being used need to be set up correctly in order for the files and programs to be accessible. Here is how to set up and use remote desktop.

First, you will need three things:
- The host computer. This is the computer that contains the files and applications that you will be accessing from remote locations. It must also have Windows XP Professional installed on it.
- The remote computer, also know as the client. This computer must have remote desktop software installed on it.
- A connection to the two computers. This can be done through a VPN connection or by using the IP address of the host.

To set up the remote desktop, start with the host computer. Click Start, then Control Panel, then click Performance and Maintenance. Then click System and the Remote tab. Select the check box that says “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” and click OK.

Then you should ensure the Windows Firewall is set up correctly. In the Control Panel, click Security Center. The screen will ask you want you want to manage security settings for. Click Windows Firewall. Ensure the “Don’t allow exceptions” check box is not selected. Select the Exceptions tab and make sure the Remote Desktop box is checked. Click OK and close all windows. The host is now set up for remote desktop.

Next you will need the name of host computer. To find it, go to the Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, then System, and then the Computer Name tab. Note the computer name and click OK. Close all windows but leave the computer locked and running.

Now you need to set up the client computer. Click Start, go to All Programs and then click Accessories. Click Communications and then click Remote Desktop Connection. In the Computer box, type in the name of the host computer and click Connect. A Log On to Windows dialog box will appear. Type in your password, user name and domain (if applicable) and click OK. The Remote Desktop window will open and you will be able to view all the desktop setting, files and networks that appear on the host computer. You will be able to work as if you were in the office, plus nobody can see the work you are doing remotely. To end the remote desktop session, simply log off of the client computer.
