Steeped deep in American history, Shawnee, Kansas is four miles from Overland, Kansas and eight miles from Kansas City, Missouri. In the 1820’s the Shawnee Indians were forcibly relocated to this area of NW Johnson County.

With a population of about 47,000 people, Shawnee has small town charm, a very low crime rate, excellent schools, and very friendly people to call your neighbors. No wonder we were ranked 17th by Money Magazine as one of the best places to live in America!

The Shawnee Mission and Desoto School districts, the 2 public districts that serve our students, received the “Gold Medal” designation, in 2008 awarded by Expansion Management Magazine. Our students typically score above the national average on standardized tests.

You will always find something exciting to do in Shawnee. In the summer, there are visits to the city parks, pools and the Farmers Market from May through October. Come fall enjoy outdoor concerts in the park, the Great Griller’s Bar-b-que Contest, along with the “Old Shawnee Days“, a four day festival. Winter will bring “Christmas Around Town” celebration, with many businesses hosting open houses and Santa joining the festivities by helping to light the Christmas tree. You can also enjoy old-fashioned sleigh rides and carriage rides along with live music. Yes, we do get snow in the winter, so be sure to buy a sled or toboggan and have some fun!

Tourists and residents alike enjoy Shawnee Town Museum, the Wonderscope Children’s interactive museum and The Johnson County Museum. Shawnee Mission Park, with 1200 acres of land and a lake is another popular attraction as is the Tomahawk Hills Golf Course and Recreation Center.

There are over 40 restaurants with fun places for the kids to elegant dining locations for adults. Children enjoy Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant because your food comes to the table via an overhead train! Hereford House or J. Murphy’s Irish Pub and Grill are great places to eat and relax with a cocktail. Grab a quick bite at Windy’s or Chili’s for lunch, a donut from Mr. D’s Donut shop, or head to Barb’s Kolache Bakery for some delectable baked goods.

Presently there are a little over 600 homes available for sale and they range in price from under $100,000 to over a million! The average price is in the $240,000 range. Choices include everything from Single and multi family homes to condominiums or townhouses. In addition, villas and patio homes as well as homes on acreage or on a golf course are for sale.

In the older section of town, the Bradley Hills subdivision, built in 1950 has, has streets lined with mature trees making canopies over the road. Smaller homes staggered on large lots, rather than all set in neat rows, gives the area great charm and character! Many driveways are not paved and most of the older subdivisions do not have sidewalks. In the heart of town, Shawnee Subdivision built in the 1960‘s, has homes with large front yards, nestled in among the mature trees. Cottage style to federalist in design, these well maintained homes are of brick, shake shingles or wood clapboard siding.

Timberstone or Hillcrest Farms, subdivisions built in the 2000’s, have large homes in the $299,000 price range. In the Heartland Hills subdivision, for around $179,000 you can buy a traditional style home build in 1998 or later.

New subdivisions with homes in the $280,000 to over $400,000 price bracket include The Country Crossing of Gray Oaks, Eagle View of Gray Oaks, and Madison Ridge of Gray Oaks. There is a clubhouse with swimming pool and a playground for the children. Wide streets, many of them cul-de-sacs, are great for bicycling. Monticello Middle School and Mid Valley High School are located among those subdivisions. You will find resale homes, new homes for sale and lots available if you want to build.

There is also rural property, with or without a home available if you are looking for acreage to grow a garden or raise animals but expect to be find prices up in the million dollars or more brackets.
