In 1919, Olympus Corporation was founded under the name Takachiho Seisakusho in Japan, and within one year had produced its very first product, a microscope. A new chip is inserted in the camera and pictures are stored on the new chip. When video images are taken with the camera, the same transfer choices are made and the video clip can be saved on the chip or on a computer. Accidental deletion of the pictures is not a concern unless a magnetic field is brought in contact with the chip.

Whenever new strides are made in camera technology, the storage devices that accompany the camera must be produced concurrently so that the market will accept both devices. Olympus digital cameras are capable of taking panoramic pictures, and only the Olympus xD-picture memory card is able to support this feature. Using a memory chip without the ability to store the panoramic picture would result in a truncated picture when storing or printing the picture. Olympus developed a Type M+ memory card that is 1.5 times faster than their Type M card. Speed in writing to the memory chip is very important when sequential shooting is used to capture the perfect action shots. The camera will cease to work until the picture is safely stored on the chip. When the storage operation takes less than a second, the photographer enjoys capturing multiple shots without hesitation or loss of opportunity.
