Fantastic beaches, world-class golf, and a wide variety of recreational and entertainment options are among the many things that make Virginia Beach one of the East Coast’s most popular vacation destinations for just about every type of vacationer.

A great vacation starts at one of the many terrific waterfront Virginia Beach resorts. Like just about everything else in Virginia beach, the choices are seemingly endless ranging from luxury accommodations, perfect for couples looking to get away from it all, to choices that are family friendly offering amenities sure to please parents and children alike.

Once settled in, visitors won’t find themselves wondering what to do in this classic ocean-side resort. The three-mile-long boardwalk offers something for everyone and just about every water sport imaginable is available. Plus, Virginia Beach boasts world-class golf courses, miles of hiking trails, and plenty of sightseeing.

On the Boardwalk

The boardwalk is the center of activity in Virginia Beach. It was originally built in 1888 as a five-block walkway. Today it is three miles long and has a carnival-like atmosphere that beckons fun-loving visitors. The boardwalk has walking and riding areas with a bike path built specifically to accommodate surreys, bicycles and skaters.

Many of the Virginia Beach resorts and hotels are located along the boardwalk as are amusement centers, museums, upscale shops, street vendors, a fishing pier and plenty of outdoor entertainment. Summertime visitors will surely enjoy the many street performers, festivals, entertainment and fireworks.

A few of the most notable stops along the boardwalk include:

• The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is located in the oldest beach house that’s still standing along the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

• For anglers visiting from April to October, the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier is worth exploring. While a fee is charged to fish from the pier, a fishing license is not required.

• The Boardwalk Amusement Park offers rides, games and fun for kids of all ages.

• The old Coast Guard Station now hosts a seaside museum that focuses on the areas maritime heritage, including Virginia shipwrecks.

• Neptune Park, home of the King Neptune statue, is a popular spot for picture taking. The sculpture is a 34-feet-tall depiction of King Neptune holding a trident, surrounded by dolphins, an octopus, a sea turtle and other sea creatures.

Virginia Beach is steeped in a rich history and features a variety of museums and historical sites that pay tribute to the “Old South.” For example, The Ferry Plantation is among the most noteworthy historical sites; and one of the oldest buildings in the area is the Adam Keeling House.

For lighthouse aficionados a visit to the Cape Henry Lighthouses is worth the time. It is located within Fort Story, which is an Active Army base. There are two lighthouses within the base. The oldest was constructed in 1772 and was the beacon for ships heading into the Chesapeake Bay for more than 100 years. This lighthouse is open to the public; but to get on the Army base a current U.S.-government-issued identification is required for U.S. citizens, and citizens of other countries must present a current passport.

The Virgina Aquarium and Marine Science Center is another great place to explore. It is known as one of the best aquariums in the country with 800,000 gallons of sea exhibits and animal habitats, an aviary, walking paths, an IMAX theater, and plenty of hands-on exhibits for a full day of family fun.

Virginia Beach Golf Vacations

Virginia Beach boasts some of the best golf courses found along the East Coast. Many Virginia Beach resorts offer golf specials that include accommodations and a round or two of golf at world-class courses designed by golf greats like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

Dining and Nightlife
The dining options in Virginia Beach range from family-friendly favorites to fine dining that features coastal cuisine that is sure to please even the most discerning palette. There is also plenty of evening entertainment including live music, local bands, night clubs, and even hot spots for an evening of karaoke.

No matter what, Virginia Beach vacationers should be sure to check with the locals, who will be more than happy to recommend recreational activities, restaurants and entertainment that may be off the beaten path, but well worth experiencing.
