Calculators Texas Instruments - Choosing the Right Texas Instruments Calculator

functions perform calculus graphing

Purchasing a graphing calculator be a confusing and daunting task due to the many graphing calculators floating around on the market. Calculators made by Texas Instruments have always been considered top of the line, and many courses require them. Before you spend more money than you need to on a calculator, find out what functions you need to perform before you buy the fanciest calculator in the catalog.

One of the most well known and popular calculators by Texas Instruments is the TI-83. The TI-83 is a well rounded calculator that will perform most of the functions you need from a calculator. However, the TI-83 is unable to perform the advanced functions that are required of it in Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, or Chemistry. Due to these limits, despite being the most affordable calculator in the Texas Instruments line of graphing calculators, the TI-83 will need to be replaced once you pass Algebra.

The TI-84 falls into the same boat as the TI-83, with the only real differences between the two calculators being the amount of memory and additional applications that the TI-84 can support. However, the TI-84 is as obsolete as the TI-83 when it comes to performing functions related to Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, however, performs the functions of all math related subjects aside from Calculus. Unless you are going to study Calculus, this model will perform all of the functions that you need out of a Texas Instruments calculator.

The next of the Texas Instruments calculators is the TI-89, which most people believe to be an upgrade to the TI-83 and TI-84. The TI-89 is a great disappointment though in that it cannot even perform the same functions that the TI-83 performs. The only edge that the TI-89 has is the ability to perform Calculus functions, but this edge is quickly taken away by the next product in the Texas Instruments line, which performs every operation that all of its predecessors were able to.

The TI-Nspire is the ultimate graphing calculator and possesses all of the bells and whistles, including rechargeable batteries, a built in mouse and 20 MB of memory. For advanced math, this calculator is the best choice on the market. With an interchangeable keypad, the TI-Nspire allows you to switch between being able to perform all of the functions of the TI-84 Plus and to be able to perform the needed functions for Calculus and Chemistry.

Before you purchase a Texas Instruments calculator, make sure that you evaluate exactly what you need out of your calculator. In most cases the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or the TI-Nspire will meet your demands. However, if you do not plan to use the calculator for anything beyond Algebra, you may wish to consider the TI-83. Just as you would when you shop for anything else, be sure that you are not paying for features that you do not need.
