Auburn is a mid-sized city in Lee County, east central Alabama. Although Auburn has 56,088 residents, the metro area, including twin city Opelika, has a population of 130,516. Auburn, Alabama is primarily a college city, home to Auburn University. Auburn was ranked as the second-best city in which to live in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report in 2009 and it is the fastest-growing city in the state. At any given time there are approximately 1,500 pre-owned Auburn homes for sale and many more being built in new subdivisions every year.

Auburn was first incorporated in 1839 by a combination of Baptists and Methodists. The population first came because of the city’s excellent educational institutions. This trend continues to this day. Auburn University employs one-fourth of all residents of working age. Residents are served by a public school system that includes six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The public schools continue to be ranked among the top in the nation.

The weather in Auburn is typically Alabaman, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. The city also gets an average of 52.6 inches of rainfall every year. There are just over 18,000 households in the city, and the median income those households is $17,206.

Unlike most other cities in the U.S., Auburn has not been hit as hard by the housing glut of the late 2000s. Foreclosures in Auburn are slim, so most houses are being sold by the owner and not by the lenders. The median price for a single-family home hovers from $180,000 to $220,000, much lower than many other cities in the country. This price is slowly and steadily rising, as it would in any stable market. The selling price of the few foreclosures that exist in the city is about $30,000 less than market. The asking price of Auburn homes for sale ranges from $60,000 on the low end and up to $4.5 million for the most luxurious.

Single-family houses are, far and away, the most common form of Auburn homes for sale. However, the city does support some condominiums. Condominiums tend to sell for less than single-family houses of the same size.
