Situated in Indian River county on Florida’s Atlantic coast, the city of Vero Beach covers 17 square miles and is separated from the ocean by the intercoastal waterway. It’s connected by two bridges with the town of Riomar which sits on an outer island facing the Atlantic.

The center of town is right on US highway One, with Interstate 95 running north-south along the west side of town. The Vero Beach municipal airport is home to the Piper Aircraft Corporation plus aircraft service and repair facilities. It’s a busy general aviation airport on the north side of town with restaurants and car rental. There is airport transportation services going to West Palm Beach and Melbourne, the nearest cities with airline service.

Public transportation is provided by county operated GoLine. In 2008 the population of about 17 thousand was living in 10,232 dwelling units, of which about 8,500 were occupied. Health care is the biggest occupation here. The median age is in the forties, thus a mostly middle-age population. Home sale prices have dropped in the last two years with the average sale price of all properties now around 150K.

Monthly rentals begin around the $600s and reach $5000 or more for waterfront estates. There are many apartment and condominium communities for those over age 55. Those signing a one or two year lease may get a good deal. A lot depends on proximity to the beach. Short distances to the beach don’t show traffic congestion making for 30 minute commutes or longer. Vero Beach South is a separate city with a population of about 23 thousand.
