GLAIR (from Fr. glaire, probably from Lat. clams, clear, bright), the white of an egg, and hence a term used for a preparation made of this and used, in bookbinding and in gilding, to retain the gold and as a varnish. The adjective " glairy " is used of substances having the viscous and transparent consistency of the white of an egg.
