ARAUCO, a coast province of southern Chile, bounded N., E. and S. by the provinces of Concepcion, Bio-bio, Malleco and Cautin. Area, 2458 sq. m.; pop. (est. 1902) 70,635. The province originally covered the once independent Indian territory of Araucania (q.v.), but this was afterwards divided into four provinces. It is devoted largely to agricultural pursuits. The capital Lebt (pop. in 1902, 3178) is situated on the coast about 55 m. south of Concepcion, with which it is connected by rail.
