NEIGHBOUR (O. Eng. neahgebiir, from Walt, " nigh," " near ") and gebiir, " boor," literally " dweller," " husbandman "; cf. Dan. and Swed. nabo, Ger. Nachbar), properly one who lives in a house close to one, hence any one of a number of persons living in the same locality. From Biblical associations (Luke x. 27) the word is used widely of one's fellow-men.
