RECUSANT (from Lat. recusare, to refuse), the name, in English history, given in the lath and 17th centuries to those persons who persisted in refusing to attend the services of the English Church, and particularly to those of the Roman Catholic faith (see ROMAN.CATHOLIC CHURCH, ยง English Law).
