STAVELEY, a town in the north-western parliamentary division of Derbyshire, England, 12 M. S.E. of Sheffield, on the Midland and the Great Central railways. Pop. (root), 11,420. It lies in the valley of the Rother, in a populous industrial district, devoted chiefly to the working of coal and iron; while there are manufactures of iron goods and brushes in the town. The church of St John the Baptist is Early English, with much Perpendicular and modern alteration; it contains a number of interesting early monuments.
