SVI. Ie.g. in fault which earlier was spelt without 1 (as in French whence it was borrowed), and which Goldsmith could still rhyme with aught. In the 15th century the Scottish dialect of English dropped 1 largely both before consonants and finally after a and it, a' = all, fa' = fall, pu' = pull, 'oo' = wool, bulk pronounced like book, &c., while after o it appears as w, row (pronounced rau) _ roll, know=knoll, &c. It is to be observed that L= 50 does not come from this symbol, but was an adaptation of 4/, the western Greek form of x, which had no corresponding sound in Latin and was therefore not included in the ordinary alphabet. This symbol was first rounded into ,J, and then changed first to 1 and ultimately to L. (P. Gr.)
