XANTHIPPE, the wife of Socrates (q.v.). Her name has become proverbial in the sense of a nagging, quarrelsome woman. Attempts have been made to show that she has been maligned, notably by E. Zeller (" Zur Ehrenrettung der Xanthippe," in his Vortrdge and Abhandlungen, i., 1875).
