ZENOBIUS, a Greek sophist, who taught rhetoric at Rome during the reign of Hadrian (A.D. 117—138). He was the author of a collection of proverbs in three books, still extant in an abridged form, compiled, according to Sufdas, from Didymus of Alexandria and " The Tarrhaean " (Lucillus of Tarrha in Crete). Zenobius is also said to have been the author of a Greek translation of Sallust and of a birthday poem (yeveOAtaKOv) on Hadrian. Editions by T. Gaisford (1836) and E. L. Leutsch-F. W.
